What do Surgical First Assistants do?
Assisting in Surgery: SFAs are hands-on during operations, assisting surgeons by performing tasks such as suturing, providing exposure at the operative site, and handling tissues.
Patient Preparation: Before surgery, they are involved in preparing the patient for the procedure, ensuring that all necessary measures are taken for a safe and successful operation.
Sterility Maintenance: SFAs play a key role in maintaining sterility in the operating theatre, a critical factor in preventing post-operative infections.
Equipment Handling: They ensure that all surgical instruments are correctly handled and available when needed during surgery.
Post-Operative Care: After the surgery, SFAs assist in the initial post-operative care of the patient, including dressing the surgical sites and helping with the patient's recovery process.
